Buoyed by Punjab Win, CM Bhagwant Mann Discusses Local Body Poll Plan with AAP State Affairs In Charge

Upbeat over its win in the recently held Punjab assembly election, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seems to be building up on the momentum with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann already strategising for the municipal corporation polls to be held later this year.

Mann met AAP Punjab affairs in charge Jarnail Singh on Friday to discuss the upcoming polls. According to sources, the two leaders have reportedly discussed the party structure at the ward level and the “urban development plan” to be released before the election.

Four municipal corporations — Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala — will go to polls in December.

The AAP has gone on an overdrive after its smashing performance in the Punjab assembly elections where it won 92 of the 117 seats, and has planned a poll blitzkrieg in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat where polls are due later this year.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has assigned the task to oversee the civic polls to Jarnail Singh, who was instrumental in the impressive performance of the party in the recently held Chandigarh corporation election.

According to AAP sources, the top brass is taking the civic body polls seriously to maintain the momentum. Jarnail Singh said winning the local body elections is politically crucial as it will help the party reach out to the grassroots.

Sources also said AAP was in the final stages of drawing a blueprint to implement promised development agendas in urban areas.

AAP had won all eight assembly seats under the Patiala Corporation, 13 of the 14 seats in the Ludhiana Corporation, nine of 11 in the Amritsar Corporation and four of nine in the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation. While former Patiala Mayor Ajitpal Singh Kohli is now an AAP MLA, after defeating former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the sitting mayor of Amritsar, Karamjit Singh Rintu, too, had joined the AAP, days before the assembly elections.

Unlike the Akali and Congress governments, Aam Aadmi Party has stood up to its promises made during elections and upheld the prestige of Sikhism by sending the accused in Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege case to jail. The above statement was delivered by Jarnail Singh, the AAP In-Charge of Punjab and Chandigarh.

“It was a sorry state of affairs in Punjab during the rule of Akali as well as under the Congress party’s governments as none paid any heed to the progress of the state and its people. AAP on the other hand has a very clear policy to work with utmost sincerity and make the state prosper,” said Jarnail Singh, a three time MLA from Delhi’s Tilak Nagar constituency.

Speaking in his capacity as the party’s in-charge of Punjab and Chandigarh, Singh said that this particular incident of “beadabi” (or sacrilege) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji had hurt millions of people living in Punjab and also the Punjabis living in various parts of the world. “But instead of bringing the guilty to the book, the ruling political parties only used the issue for their vested interests. But our party as promised did not waste any time in taking quick action against the culprits,” Singh said further

He also stated that the sentencing of three Dera Sacha Sauda followers to three-year jail in the sacrilege case is a warning to the anti-social elements that Aam Aadmi Party has zero tolerance towards crime and criminals.

Congress’s high command is pulling its strings from Delhi: Jarnail Singh

Chandigarh, February 2, 2022: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab affairs in-charge Jarnail Singh, reacting to the statement of Punjab Congress leader Sunil Jakhar, said that Jakhar’s statement has proved that Congress Party’s high command Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, sitting in Delhi, is pulling the strings of Congress leaders in Punjab.

Gandhi’s family, against the recommendation of their MLAs, appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chief Minister of Punjab so that they can remote control the government in Punjab.

Addressing the media at the party headquarters on Wednesday, Jarnail Singh cited the statement of Sunil Jakhar, in which he said that 42 MLAs agreed on Jakhar’s name in the Congress MLAs’ meeting held after the removal of Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa 16, Preneet Kaur 12, Navjot Sidhu 6 and Chief Minister Channi had the support of only two MLAs and said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had acted against the wishes of their MLAs, only for their satisfaction.

Charanjit Singh Channi, who had the support of two MLAs, was named the Chief Minister and imposed on the people of Punjab.

He said that Congress leaders accuse the Aam Aadmi Party of being controlled from Delhi when the reality is that the Congress party runs on the behest of Delhi. Chief Minister Channi is proof of this.

He said that BJP and Congress high command imposes their chief ministers on in every state, whereas Aam Aadmi Party for the first time in the history of the country asked for the opinion of the people to name its chief ministerial candidate in Punjab and according to the choice of the people of Punjab Bhagwant Mann has been declared as CM face.

On Congress’s survey for the Chief Minister, Jarnail Singh said that the Congress leaders used to raise questions on the survey of the Aam Aadmi Party. Now they are conducting the survey.

First Congress raises question and then they imitate the Aam Aadmi Party. He said that Congress is giving three options in its survey, first Charanjit Singh Channi, second Navjot Sidhu and third none of these. But we didn’t put limit on options and asked the people to name the Chief Minister of their choice. In fact, the Congress party is frightened.

Fearing defeat, Chief Minister Channi is contesting from two seats, but he will lose from both the constituencies. This time people have made up their mind to teach a lesson to Congress. On February 20, the people of Punjab will give a fitting reply to Congress’s lies and loot.

AAP appoints Delhi MLA Jarnail Singh as Punjab in-charge

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday appointed its three-term MLA from Delhi’s Tilak Nagar, Jarnail Singh, as in-charge of the party’s Punjab unit. Jarnail Singh replaced Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

Soon after being appointed, the 39 year-old Jarnail Singh, in a tweet, said: “Thanks to Arvind Kejriwal and whole Aam Aadmi Party leadership for having faith on me by giving this big leadership. I promise to deliver and fulfill expectations of people for a better Punjab with AAP Punjab organisation together”.

He will be the third state in-charge of the party in Punjab in recent years. AAP had fought the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls with Sanjay Singh as the in-charge. As against expectations that AAP would storm to power in the state, the party could manage only 20 seats in 2017. Sanjay Singh resigned soon after the Assembly results were declared. He resigned amidst allegations of having mishandled the allocation of tickets.

Sisodia was appointed as the next state in-charge in December 2017 but the string of losses in the electoral arena continued unabated. AAP could only manage to win one Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 parliamentary elections with its candidates faring poorly in all other seats.

The appointment of a Sikh face as the state in-charge is being seen as AAP’s way of reaching out to the voters of Punjab as the ‘outsider’ tag of its earlier state in-charges was held against the party. Also, after the sweeping victory in Delhi Assembly elections earlier this month, the party is looking to consolidate its position in Punjab for the 2022 Assembly polls.

Jarnail Singh has won the 2013, 2015 and 2020 (Delhi) assembly polls. This year, he defeated the nearest rival, a BJP candidate, by a margin of 28,029 votes. He has also been the president of the youth wing of the party. The task for Jarnail Singh in Punjab is cut out with the party facing dissent within its ranks and several MLAs having turned rebels. It will be upto him to cobble the party together and put it in a fighting position for the next assembly polls.
